The Scene By The Sea

I’m delighted to be included in this important group show, along with my partner Julie O’Sullivan.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Thames Group presents ‘The Scene By The Sea’, a multi-discipline exhibition featuring work by over 30 artists and special guests including; Billy Bragg, Phill Jupitus, Wilko Johnson, Ian Dury, Vivian Stanshall and more.

Artists such as renowned painter Simon Monk, award winning sculptor Anne Schwegmann-Fielding, portrait painter Victoria Sills, photographer Dean Chalkley and assemblage artist Catriona Faulkner have responded to locations plotted on a map created by author/musician Will Birch, artist and former ‘Clash’ right-hand man, Kosmo Vinyl together with graphic artist Jules Balme.

The map and resulting exhibition is an exploration of many of the hippest clubs, pubs, discotheques, dancehalls, coffee bars, music shops and fashion boutiques that were pivotal in helping to create Southend’s rich pop culture heritage.

Leigh Art Trail

Our annual town-wide open studios week. I am showing new work from my time exploring the amazing chapel of St Peter on the Wall at Bradwell on Sea in Essex. This is probably the oldest church in the country and dates from 653AD! I have taken pressings from the surfaces of the walls which include Roman era bricks. Cyanotype prints and film add detail, and bring this remarkable site into our gallery at Old Leigh.

My gallery mates Julie O’Sullivan, Sheila Appleton and Ian E Smith are also showing new work. We are definitely there Sat 5th-Tues 8th, but please contact Ian on 07817 463542 for Weds-Sun (as Julie and I will be away at Celebrating Ceramics listed below).

Celebrating Ceramics is an artist led event, showcasing the very best in the world of contemporary ceramics. This fine selection of artistic talent is set against the backdrop of Waterperry House and Gardens. Understand the creative talent first-hand with demonstrations from some of the artists. Meet and purchase directly from 150 of the leading ceramic artists. There will also be an amazing range of food, drink and music to complement your day.

Celebrating Ceramics is organised, in partnership with Waterperry Gardens, by Craft In Focus who have been staging contemporary mixed discipline craft events for over 20 years . Part of the organising team includes the curator of the ceramics section of Art in Action for 26 years who has a real passion for ceramics and wanted to keep the festival ethos of Art In Action at the heart of Celebrating Ceramics. The public can now expect an event with the same atmosphere as Art In Action and a loyal following of ceramic artists who want to demonstrate and meet their collecting public at this wonderful three day event. This year there is also a jewellery fair at the same time, so more good things to see.
